Sweet Tooth Season 3 Has Already Filmed, Will Be Its Last

All good things must end, but the end may be coming sooner than expected for Netflix's "Sweet Tooth." The hit series, which is based on Jeff Lemire's DC Comics/Vertigo book of the same name, has been renewed for a third and final season by the streaming service. What's more, the third season has already been filmed, indicating that we may actually be seeing it sooner rather than later. 

 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix already wrapped production on "Sweet Tooth" season 3, with filming taking place in New Zealand. There is no word yet on a release date but Netflix did tease that the final season is "coming soon." This might be a welcome surprise for fans, given that season 2 only just released on the streaming service in April. Showrunner and creator Jim Mickle had this to say in a statement: 

"In a lot of ways, it's exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus' story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus' journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they've come from and where they're going. Season three is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn't see in season one or two."

What do we know about Sweet Tooth season 3?

It was almost certainly wise of Netflix to pull the trigger on back-to-back seasons of "Sweet Tooth." The first season premiered in 2021 and instantly became a big hit. Given that it centers on a cast of young actors, led by Christian Convery as Gus, getting more episodes in the can while the actors still looked young was a good idea. As we've seen with "Stranger Things" in its later seasons, kids grow up fast.

"Sweet Tooth" takes place ten years after "The Great Crumble" wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies who were born part human, part animal. Many humans begin to fear and hunt them. After a decade of living safely in the forest, Gus (Convery), a sheltered deer-boy, befriends a loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), and the two of them set out on an extraordinary adventure together.

There's no word yet on the specific returning cast but the series also stars Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Singh, Will Forte as Richard, Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear, Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden, Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh, Neil Sandilands as General Abbot, and James Brolin as the voice of the narrator. The series is executive produced by Susan Downey, Robert Downey Jr., Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran, with Evan Moore serving as producer. The show was made by Team Downey and Warner Bros. Television.

"Sweet Tooth" seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Netflix, with season 3 on the way.
